Continuity of Care
Our practice is committed to ensuring that patients, where possible, receive ongoing care from their preferred doctor. Our staff will check with you who your preferred doctor is when organising an appointment. However, there are times when your preferred doctor may be away or fully booked. At these times, the doctors encourage patients to see their practice colleagues. Your medical record is accessible by all doctors at Pioneer Medical Centre to ensure your care is consistent.
We operate on an appointment only basis, unless an emergency occurs. Duration of a standard appointment is 15 minutes. Please ring 83962522 to arrange your appointment. Every effort will be made to provide you with your preferred time, however, due to seasonal demand or doctor absence, we may not be able to accommodate your specific requirements. Our staff will endeavour to provide you with other options.
Emergencies will be given priority and our staff will attempt to contact you if there is a delay.
Please give thought to the amount of time your appointment may require - if there are multiple problems or complex issues to discuss let our staff know when you book. Longer appointments are required for medicals, counselling, pap smears, procedures, new patients, multiple or complex problems.
New patient appointments
We welcome new patients at Pioneer Medical Centre. Drs Ford and Joseph are unable to take on new patients due to their heavy patient load but all our other practice doctors are able to see new patients. New patients require a 30minute appointment for their first attendance. This allows time for the doctor to collect important medical information from you. We ask that new patients pay their first attendance in full on the day.
Our practice nurses do IMMUNISATIONS (child and travel), injections, blood pressure checks, wounds management and Point of Care testing for diabetes and warfarin. They also see patients with chronic conditions who need regular review. Appointments for the practice nurses can be booked ahead as needed.
Notify the Receptionist at least 3 hours prior to your scheduled appointment if you are unable to attend. Non attendance of booked appointments will incur a non Medicare fee of $50.00.
If you or a family member require an interpreter service, let us know when you book an appointment so that this can be organised.
Our practice is open until 7pm at night. If you require appointments or home visits after this time, the practice phones are diverted to a Medical Deputising service. For more information
Home Visits/After Hours Services
Home visits are available to regular practice patients who are in genuine need and are too ill to attend the surgery. If you require a home visit, we ask that you call the surgery early to allow for scheduling to occur. If the doctors are unable to meet an on-the-day request for home visits, our staff will discuss other alternatives.
After Hours Service
Patients are able to access care after hours by calling 8396 2522 24 hours a day. Routine after hours calls will be attended by our Deputising Service, who report to the Practice Doctors. The Deputising service contacts surgery doctors from 6am weekdays for urgent matters.
Pathology and Radiology Results
Patients are advised that it is their responsibility to follow up any investigations undertaken. Results of routine tests are normally available within two working days (some tests such as Pap smear results or specialised blood tests may take up to a week). Our administrative staff are able to provide you with the doctor’s comments but we ask that you ring after 10am so that our staff have time to assist you with this information.
Results can only be given to the patient whose name appears on the test unless they are a minor. For patient privacy, our staff will need to check the identity of the caller by confirming certain information.
Our administrative staff are not medically trained to interpret results, but are happy to provide you with the doctor’s notations. If you require further information or you have a query regarding the information you are provided with, you may need to make an appointment to discuss with your doctor.
Our practice is committed to preventative care. You may receive a reminder notice at certain times regarding an attendance for preventative health services (pap smear due, immunizations due, review required). If you do not wish to be recalled please let reception know.
Patients can also log into our website. For first time users, you will need to create a user name and password. This will provide access to self managed reminders for a variety of health care matters eg Pap smears, cholesterol checks, immunisations etc. Once you have selected a reminder, a reminder will be sent to your nominated email address when it is due.
Most prescriptions provide sufficient medication to last until your condition needs to be reviewed by your doctor. With very few exceptions (approved by the doctor), prescriptions are not routinely written without consultation – this ensures that your doctor is able to determine the appropriate medications at the time. If you have lost your script or it has been destroyed, your request will be forwarded to your doctor. A replacement script may be issued at the doctor’s discretion without an appointment. There may be a non Medicare fee of $5 incurred for a repeat prescription without attendance, and we require 24hrs notice.
Referrals to specialists are valid for 12 months. A referral is needed for you to get a Medicare refund for the fees charged by a specialist. The Health Insurance Commission specifies that a consultation fee can be charged for the purposes of a referral to a specialist. This involves an assessment of your condition and a decision that the services of a specialist are required to deal with your problem. It is a requirement under Medicare that referrals are issued in advance of your consultation with a specialist, except in emergencies. For these reasons, our policy is that referrals are not available without consultation, and will not be backdated. Repeat referrals for continuing care may be written at the doctor's discretion.
It is a legal requirement for you to be seen by a doctor for a sick certificate to be issued. It is illegal for sick certificates to be backdated.
Other Professional Services
Non Medicare services and their charges
Some services provided by Pioneer Medical Centre may not attract a Medicare rebate such as dressings, heavy vehicle licences, employment medicals, completion of travel forms.
So that we can advise you of the fees that may apply, please discuss your requirements with your doctor or our front reception staff.
It is flu vaccination season. There have been some interruptions to flu vaccine availability but we still have flu vaccines available for the Government funded programme. If you have any of the followingconditions you will be eligible for a free vaccine :-
Lung disease eg SEVERE asthma, COPD
Cancer, impaired immunity
Neurological conditions eg MS, seizure disorders
Or you are over 65
Or a child under 5
Or you are pregnant
Or you are an Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander
Then vaccine is free.
If you do not meet any of the above criteria, but still wish to have a flu vaccination, you will need to purchae a vaccine. Unfortunately at this time (June 2018) we do not have any private stock of the flu vaccine due to a nation wide shortage - we are awaiting more stock. Patients may be able to source private flu vaccines from chemists. Please feel free to ring the practice to get an update on expected delivery of stock.
